Lawyer- journalist Sandra Nneka Umeh publishes Media Law in Nigeria and five other novels

Nigerian lawyer, author and journalist, Sandra Nneka Umeh, has published a new law book titled Media Law in Nigeria, alongside five novels as part of her growing body of literary works.

The law book, which is divided into 11 chapters, provides a practical guide to journalists and media practitioners on the legal principles they need to understand when gathering, writing and publishing news.

Umeh said the book was written to help journalists avoid legal pitfalls that could arise from careless reporting and to deepen their understanding of the laws governing the media profession in Nigeria.

Among the issues examined in the book are freedom of the press, defamation, contempt of court, copyright, official secrets, cybercrime, investigative journalism and election reporting. It also provides journalists with practical considerations to bear in mind before publishing stories.

The book's foreword was written by Special Adviser to the Senate President on Legal and Constitutional Matters Dr. Monday Onyekachi Ubani.

The author, who combines journalism and creative writing, said her experience in the media industry and legal profession inspired her to produce a book that would serve as a useful reference for practising and aspiring journalists.

Umeh is a Senior Editor with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), where she has built experience in journalism and news editing. She also serves as Alternate Chairman of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) Lawyers in the Media Forum.

Beyond legal writing, Umeh has also established herself as a fiction writer, with five novels to her name: A Stroke of Fate, Leprose Heart, Agu-Nwanyi, Help Me Kill My Wife and Izeyuwa.

Her novels explore themes including resilience, courage, betrayal, family, justice, hope and the triumph of the human spirit.

With the publication of Media Law in Nigeria, Umeh brings together her experiences as a lawyer and media professional to provide journalists with a resource aimed at promoting responsible reporting and helping practitioners understand the legal consequences of their work.

The book is expected to be particularly useful to journalists, journalism students, media organisations, lawyers, communication scholars and other professionals interested in the relationship between law and the media in Nigeria.
