NBA PARTICIPATES IN POLICY DIALOGUE ON POLICE REFORM

As part of support towards the reform of the Nigerian Police, the NBA President - Olumide Akpata, on Wednesday, 18th November 2020, served as a panelist at the Legislative Agenda and Public Policy Dialogue Series organised by the House of Representatives. The Dialogue, with the theme: *'Policing and Human Rights in Nigeria'*, was held at the Transcorp Hilton, Abuja.

Other members of the Panel were Rt. Hon. Femi Gbajabiamila (Speaker, House of Representatives); Inspector General of Police - Mohammed Adamu; Executive Secretary, NHRC - Tony Ojukwu; Director, Centre for Democracy and Development - Idahat Hassan. Others were the Chairman, Police Service Commission - Musiliu Smith and Bobo F. Ajudua, a Youth Advocate.

The Panel discussed amongst other issues, the proposed Police Service Commission (Reform) Bill 2020, and its prospects in enthroning accountability, transparency and improved disciplinary culture in the Nigerian Police Force. The program also afforded stakeholders the latitude to make inputs on the proposed Bill, as well as discuss the challenges of policing and human rights in Nigeria.

The Proposed Bill is due for presentation in the House of Representatives for full legislative action by the lower chamber, upon resumption from recess.

The NBA will continue to update our members on the progress of the Bill and other ancillary matters related thereto.

Dr. Rapulu Nduka
Publicity Secretary
