In a time of universal deceit – telling the truth is a revolutionary act." - George Orwell
The literary and journalistic community in Benin City is in mourning following the sudden passing of Mr. Austin Adibe Emeyonu, the State Correspondent of THISDAY Newspapers. A statement from the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Edo State Council, signed by Chairman Dr. Festus Alenkhe and Secretary Mr. Andy Egbon, confirmed that Mr. Emeyonu died on the night of Friday, October 17, 2025.
Benin writers remember him not only as a seasoned journalist but as a man of the highest integrity—one who never compromised his principles and firmly rejected the culture of brown envelopes associated with some Journalists. Just hours before his passing, he was seen at the Press Centre in Benin City, full of life and camaraderie, engaging warmly with colleagues and friends.
His legacy of ethical journalism and unwavering commitment to truth, will continue to inspire generations of writers and reporters.
The Journalist like Socrates , saw truth as a medicine to the soul .
Like Usman Dan Fodio said :
"Conscience is an open wound ,only the truth call heal it".
Mr.Emeyonu will be sorely missed for his accurate reportage , his principled stance on issues and his desire to build an egalitarian society with his reportage .
To live in the hearts of those who love you is not to die .
